We’re literally going crazy over the braids we saw on the catwalk at Valentino’s show. Realized by hair guru Guido Palau, these braids set the mood for the show and were inspired by African colours and shapes. Hair was divided into sections and gathered into braids, ending in a chignon, which adds a touch of “classic” ballet-inspired elegance to the hairdo. Meanwhile, makeup was done by none other than Pat McGrath who we adore…
The style had Instagrammers going wild. We received a comment that mused about whether the style would be perceived as an appropriation of a traditional black hairstyle.
@cocow1957 commented in a knowing voice, “Very cute. Is Valentino about get some blowback for the culture blend hairstyle used in the show?”
Tamu, @TamuMcPherson replied, “I don’t think so. They were embracing a style worn by black women, but which is often worn in Hollywood and on the red carpet. I know women of different nationalities that also embrace the style. You should have seen the models backstage all together. They were heavenly and their hairstyles were stunning. This was a celebration.”@just_sinead chimmed in with her francophile wisdom, “Gorgeous! In Europe, this hair is a fashion statement. In the States, it’s “controversial.” This speaks volumes to me.”
Are we onto a new trend here? What do you think? Please share in the comments. xo
