Our favorite blonde twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, opened the first The Row store in Los Angeles earlier this week, at 8440 Melrose Place. We’re excited. Since the launch of their brand back in 2006 we’ve always coveted their tailored, clean-cut pieces (although we’ve not always been able to afford them) that are great elegant wardrobe staples.
We love the twins’ boho-chic yet sophisticated and grown up style, and we’re always curious to see what they’ll be wearing on the red carpet next (think of their Met Ball 2014 outfits – very elegant and maybe a little too grown up but they pulled it off brilliantly). They’ve been in the spotlight since a very young age and we’ve been following their career as if they were our incredibly talented little sisters. From their beginnings, staring on as Michelle Tanner in the tv-series Full House, to their successful fashion career and their best-dressed moments at the most glamorous celebrity studded events.
Their style has blossomed throughout the years and if we could do a life switch for one day it would surely be with them. Based in the West Village in New York, from where they run all their operations, we’ve heard about their crazy wild nights, their lets-not-wash-our-hair periods (The New York Times once declared Mary-Kate a fashion icon for pioneering her signature”homeless” look, that was later adopted by many other celebrities), the spotty-complexion phase and the changing bodyguards every other week phase because no one could handle their mess and all their jazz. But apart from these ups and downs they’ve proved the world that they’re so much more than just two pretty faces.
The twins also launched Elizabeth&James, a second clothing line of contemporary every-day pieces which they named after their two younger brothers (young sister Elizabeth is a very talented actress – remember “Martha Marcy May Marlene?”). It’s the perfect go to brand for great separates to wear all year round (we live in them), and has the softest jeans and silk shirts and the best khaki jackets. But we must admit that what we’ve been secretly saving up for all winter is The Row’s luxe backpack in smooth black leather…
Which brings us back to the new L.A. store that the twins refer to as a real “hidden gem”. You can’t really see it from the street – there’s only a little signpost, a plaque and a narrow window. Making it all the way more interesting and exclusive. We’ve seen some pictures online and it looks like an authentic California pad, with a swimming pool (a basket full beach robes has been placed nearby, just in case anyone feels like taking a plunge), a glass courtyard, local and antique furniture and white interiors. Isn’t this a great excuse to plan a trip L.A.? We’re booking our tickets.
