Oscar de la Renta was a great icon of style, fashion, class, elegance. We want to pay tribute to this great designer, who passed away at 82 years old, with a gallery of memorable shots from his beautifully stylish life.
From the Dominican Republic, de la Renta was born into elegance: he firstly discovered fashion in the 1950s, when he was trained by Cristobal Balenciaga in Spain. Shortly after, he made a name for himself in the 1960s for dressing the most elegant icon of the time, Ms. Jackie Kennedy. He designed for Lanvin, Elizabeth Arden, Jane Derby, and finally the haute couture collection for the house of Balmain from 1993 to 2002. At the same time, he showed ready-to-wear under his own name. Particularly known for his evening wear and red carpet gowns, he was always a favorite of celebrities, socialites and first ladies (from Betty Ford to Laura Bush, and Michelle Obama) and shaped the wardrobe of every era’s jet-set. But he was also known for his chic daytime suits, favored by women lunching at the Four Seasons or Le Cirque. There was nothing Oscar couldn’t do.
Considered the father of American Fashion, Oscar de la Renta managed to stay relevant for more than six decades with his rich, ever feminine designs. His clothes appeared in episodes of “Sex and The City” with style icon Carrie Bradshaw comparing his designs to poetry. And most recently, he designed Amal Alamuddin’s dress for her wedding to George Clooney, last month. Just a few weeks ago, he appointed Peter Copping as new creative director of the brand (after an attempt to bring John Galliano on board). Fashion has lost one of his greatest this week, but we will always remember his amazing legacy, his hard work and intelligence, his love of life, his warm, generous personality and his breath-taking designs.
Here is a gallery of stylish, sophisticated and elegant images from an amazing lifetime. Together with some of his most famous quotes. Be inspired.
