Hey There Pretty Birds,
By now you’ve all seen or read about Kimye covering Vogue America’s April Cover. What are your thoughts? We are pretty neutral in regards to Anna Wintour’s decision to put them on the cover.
If our memory serves us correctly, we tuned into Kim Kardashian when she started appearing with Paris Hilton on red carpets, and we knew that she had made it in the mainstream L.A./Hollywood/People magazine/pseudo-celebrity spotlight when she briefly dated Nick Lachey in 2006. It was kind of her L.A. socialite debutant moment that ignited her incredible ascent to household-name status.
What did we think about her infamous sex tape with Ray J? At that point Tommy Lee and Pamela had already done one (the absolute best we hear) as well as Kim’s BFF Paris Hilton, whose already rising star catapulted into space afterwards, so we just accepted Kim-Ray’s performance as a dash on the resume to stardom. A sign of the times and an indication of the direction in which popular culture was heading, especially in consideration of the reality T.V. mania that was to follow in the years after. Individuals were willing to expose extremely intimate aspects of their lives and we the audience were more than willing to consume. On that note, we’ll be the first to admit that we watch “Keeping up with Kardashians” whenever we’re in the U.S. because of it’s pop relevance. We love to be informed. Plus, how can you talk to anyone if you don’t have a global picture of the current status of popular culture?
What about her style? Honestly, have we always had perfect style? One day I will get the courage to post pics of myself during my dance-hall queen in training days. People, I used to wear custom made neoprene outfits to parties and had a weave with finger waves.
As for Kanye, call him what you want (crazy, arrogant, egomaniac) but download some of his music, glimpse the album sleeves of countless artists for his production credits and you will have to admit that he is a prolific musical genius.
And admit it to yourself, you’re totally envious of all of those Celine silk shirts and Maison Margiela couture masks that he’s been wearing for the past few seasons. We know we are.
So here we are at the Kimye style junction. Yes Kim’s style has improved since the two united, with Kim even discussing her interest in redefining her style on episodes of “Keeping up with the Kardashian.” You can see her style evolution in the gallery. We personally think that it’s awesome that Kanye has had a positive influence on his wifey-to-be. Isn’t that what loved ones are for? What’s the saying? “For better or…”
In regards to Anna’s decision to put them cover, she defends her choice in her Editor’s Letter by saying: “There’s barely a strand of the modern media that the Kardashian-Wests haven’t been able to master, and for good reason,” she added. “Kanye is an amazing performer and cultural provocateur, while Kim, through her strength of character, has created a place for herself in the glare of the world’s spotlight, and it takes real guts to do that.”
Objectively speaking, we believe that Anna’s vision is an accurate reflection of and response to popular culture today. She’s just covering it as she sees it. Risky decision or not.
Let us know your thoughts!
