Splurge Fridays: Fragrance Du Bois By Tamu McPherson

A few weeks ago Michela dropped the Fragrance Du Bois collection onto my radar with her post Christmas Gifts: Niche Perfumes For Her. She described the range as being extremely precious and therefore expensive, but I had no idea just how special it was until I dropped by its Italian press office a couple weeks ago.

Fragrance Du Bois is one of the most luxurious perfume houses that I have come across to date. The house was conceived based on the purest essence of nature and developed by fifth generation perfumers using traditions created in Grasse, France (the center of the perfume world) in the 17th Century.

Fragrance Du Bois perfumes are highly considered because the house uses 100% of it’s signature Oud oil in every bottle. Oud, a richly fragrant resin, is one of the most precious essential oils and natural materials in the world. Also known as agarwood, it is derived from the Aquilaria tree which is grown throughout south-east Asia. When attacked by the Phialophora parasitica mold, the Aquilaria tree produces oud at its center to fight off the mold. Artisans work to extract the oud from the tree. Because of it’s purity, rarity and the strong emotional effect that it has on its wearer, oud carries a very high price tag. That, and the fact that the Aquilaria tree has been placed on CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) protection in response to deforestation.

To ensure that the harvesting of oud for its perfumes is conducted in a sustainable manner and to satisfy its clients growing demands, Fragrance Du Bois acquired its own agarwood plantations and partnered with the award winning Asia Plantation Capital which will manage them. This brand video shows how oud is harvested under the partnership.

Now that I’ve shared this background info on the brand, I can say that I am really impressed by the work, details and logistics that go into producing Fragrance Du Bois perfumes. When I finally got my hands on the Fragrance Du Bois Oud Rose Intense pictured here, I was equally impressed by the care that goes into the packaging experience. I mean the gorgeous, silk-lined velvet box, the sleek bottle with the gold-plated cap adorned with Swarovski crystals had me clearing out space on my perfume shelf in the guest bathroom where I show off my finest fragrances (wink). But what really did it for me was the little wood chip that comes with each bottle and the certificate that provides all details about the tree that produced said bottles precious dose of oud.

So if you are looking for an absolutely special treat this week, splurge on a bottle of Fragrance Du Bois Rose Oud Intense Eau De Parfum. I actually think that €695 is totally worth it.
