Hey There Pretty Birds,
Have you heard of RoofTopsNYC? It’s the brand that makes the “I met God, She’s Black” and “Love is Love” t-shirts that have been going around the web lately. When Tamu suggested that we find some fun way to talk about them, our email conversation was the following:
TAMU: Hi! Lets think of a fun way to talk about this…
MARGHERITA: I can totally see Jared Leto wearing the “I met God, She’ Black” shirt.
TAMU: Yes, because God is Lupita.
Funny comments aside, the brand has a real cute story behind it: founder Dylan Chenfeld made a “God is Black” t-shirt for himself and started wearing it around New York City (where he is from). When enough people stopped him on the street to ask him where he’d bought the shirt, he decided to start making and selling them. Sweet! All designs are inspired by and created in New York City and printed in California on the softest t-shirts (think American Apparel, but even softer). Dylan also works at a record label and plays in the band “Your Underdog”. And the brand’s name, RoofTopsNYC, takes from the fact that he likes to hang out on rooftops in NYC.
What about the shirt itself? We find it fun and daring: it challenges a universal belief (that God is male and has a long beard) and turns it completely upside-down. Maybe God is black and maybe she really is a woman after all!
We should ask Jared Leto.
