Hey there Pretty Birds,
Here’s the latest news from fashion land: John Galliano, one of the most theatrical and controversial designers of all times, will be the new creative director of Maison Martin Margiela. The official statement has been released today. John Galliano, who is now 53, has been a fashion “outsider” since his anti-Semitic outbursts in Paris in 2011 led to his firing from the house of Dior (last year he advised Oscar De la Renta on his fall 2013 fall collection, but he was designer-in-residence for just 3 weeks). Galliano will be in charge of all lines – couture as well as women’s and men’s ready-to-wear – and will show his first designs in January 2015 during Couture Week.
Renzo Rosso, whose group Only The Brave controls Maison Martin Margiela, has stated: “Margiela is ready for a new charismatic creative soul. John Galliano is one of the greatest, undisputed talents of all time. A unique, exceptional couturier for a Maison that always challenged and innovated the world of fashion. I look forward to his return to create that Fashion Dream that only he can create, and wish him to here find his new home”. The Margiela legacy has been carried on by an anonymous in-house team since 2009, when the Belgian founder retired. The appointment of Galliano goes to show that Renzo Rosso is very keen on giving a greater focus to Margiela and that he is willing to take on some big challenges to do so.
