In the news this week By Team ATPB
With the state of current affairs in the US and around the world, we’re staying up to date on as much news as we can. Like many of you, we devour everything that is published on the Trump administration in an effort to keep informed about its horrible policies and so that we can share them with everyone we know (read about them every month in Nia’s “F*ck Donald Trump” series). Here’s a list of the articles and headlines about Trump and beyond that caught our attention this weekend. Check back every Monday and Friday for weekly updates. And, please share any articles that catch your attention, because sharing information is one of the most important things you can do at this moment.
Trump announced on Thursday that the United States would withdraw from the Paris climate accord, weakening efforts to combat global warming. Donald Trump then says, “I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris…”. However, the Mayor of Pittsburg
responded saying “Fact: Hillary Clinton received 80% of the vote in Pittsburgh,” on Twitter
following Trump’s announcement. “Pittsburgh stands with the world & will follow Paris Agreement.” Donald Trump said he wanted to negotiate a better deal for the United States but within minutes of the president’s remarks, the leaders of France, Germany and Italy issued a joint statement saying that the Paris climate accord was “irreversible” and could not be renegotiated.
Justice Department lawyers asked the court to overturn a decision of the full U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit that kept in place a freeze on President Trump’s revised ban. The government’s filing late Thursday asks the justices to set aside the 4th Circuit ruling and accept the case for oral arguments. Justice Department lawyers said the 4th Circuit should have considered only the language of the executive order and not second guessed the president’s motivations based on campaign promises.
Noose Found in National Museum of African American History and Culture
On Wednesday afternoon, tourists visiting the National Museum of African American History and Culture found a noose in an exhibition on segregation. The disturbing incident comes only four days after a noose was found hanging from a tree outside the Hirshhorn Museum. The investigation into the noose found at NMAAHC is ongoing, but the public and staff have been assured that the museum is safe.
The 32-year-old Ohio native said that he’s “OK” with what happened to him — as long as it continues a dialogue about how African-Americans are treated in society.
“No matter how much money you have, no matter how famous you are, no matter how many people admire you, being black in America is tough, and we got a long way to go,” James said.
Under the plan, government would negotiate prices with doctors, hospitals and other providers, acting as the “single payer” for everyone’s health care in the place of insurance companies. All Californians would receive coverage regardless of immigration status or ability to pay.
