Dolce & Gabbana SS17: Tropico Italiano By Tamu McPherson

This season Dolce & Gabbana pulled out all the stops to celebrate its SS17 collection and new Via Monte Napoleone Boutique. The brand invited me to cover the experience and to create a visual diary. As a street style photographer, I love snapping guests arriving and exiting the Dolce & Gabbana show. One of the most important shows in Milan, it’s attended by the most stylish editors and buyers across the globe. Also, the location lends itself to some of the best street style images during Milan fashion week.
ISLAND GREETINGS SICILIAN STYLE
Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are known for their Made in Italy hospitality and graciousness. Their show is one of the few where you are greeted with a glass of bubbly as you enter from the street into the show venue. This season the Creative Directors installed a coconut stand where guests could sip straight from the shell or enjoy chunks of the tropical fruit before taking their seats. Such a treat!
Refreshed and ready to find out what the coconut stand was all about, guests entered the show space and laid eyes on the stage that was decorated with a tropical set and the show theme Tropico Italiano emblazoned in red marquee lights. Then, all eyes traveled to the photo pit where a group of Dolce & Gabbana hand-selected “Millennials”, and in some cases Generation Z, were lining up for the show’s photo call. In attendance were Lucky Blue and Piper America Smith, Luka Sabbat, Cameron Dallas, Zara Larsson and Sofia Richie, to name a few.
TROPICO ITALIANO ⎮ THE SHOW
Photo call done, velvet ropes ushered away, and lights dropped, the Spring Summer 2017 show started with a surprise in the form of a troupe of dancers, who had been waiting inconspicuously in the stands, descending onto the catwalk and pumping tropical vibes, via Sicily, throughout the event space. From there, 91 looks of pure Dolce & Gabbana pleasure graced the runway. What kind of girl are you? I’m sure that the the duo have something for you: tapestry fabrics; band uniform jackets; see-through situations; embellished denim with patches, ribbons, tassels and crystals; MAXI PAILLETTES; spaghetti, the Virgin Mary, polka dots, musical instruments, goblets, roses and sunflowers, bread sticks and taralli, good luck charms, sea creatures, and (raise your hands in the air emoji) tropical cocktail prints. On the ACCESSORIES front, the brand created a carnival of must-haves including a new “it” bag, and a bevy of fun footwear options including hotel-style slippers, athletic slides, and sandals and platforms decorated with LED lights. Also present were fun D&G t-shirts, if they make it into stores, they’ll be the perfect Summer staple.
DOLCE & GABBANA SPLASHES OPEN
If you were an events planner for a mega luxury brand, how would you plan a 400 person celebration for a new flagship boutique? Hire the best caterer, order the most prestigious champagne and wine, source the freshest, most gorgeous flowers, invite the who’s who of the industry? Yes, you’re obviously great at your job, but why stop there? Why not completely take over the block on Milan’s centurion status Via Monte Napoleone where the boutique is located, adorn it with a single never-ending table, dress it with a breathtaking spray of blooms and seasonal fruit, shimmering candelabras and exquisite tableware? You hadn’t thought of that huh? You can be honest, it’s only me. Well, it doesn’t end there. In addition to the aforementioned splendor, there were also servers dressed in formal uniforms lined along the table on specially built platforms for the sole purpose of holding trays of champagne (as you do, right?) But what put the stars in my eyes was when another team of servers arrived in single file bearing personalized trays containing a special surprise for all of the female guests. Wait yeah, honestly, truly. And what was inside you beg to know? Oh, just the “it” bag that made its debut on the runway hours before. No, no, not a big deal (LOL). But a gesture that deserves its own celebration, which for me entailed heading over to the evening’s after party, where I danced to the tunes of my friend Graziano and bonded with so many of my favorite people. Nights like these are rare, one has to ENJOY every moment.
DOLCE & GABBANA, VIA MONTE NAPOLEONE
For it’s new flagship store, Dolce & Gabbana opens its doors in a gorgeous 19th century aristocratic palazzo once occupied by Ralph Lauren. With this new boutique opening and the recent opening of another store in Aoyama, Tokyo, the brand introduces its new retail strategy which breaks from the concept store philosophy, opting instead for “a new formula where emotion, dialog, diversity and cultural exchange come together in spaces that are stages, not shops, where experience and storytelling are the protagonists.” Spanning over 17,000 square feet, the space touches on the rich personalities of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, and is a “dialog between the energy of the Baroque and the clarity of Modernism.” You see the conversation everywhere you turn. Clean, smooth lines framing ultra-beautiful green marble central walls, brocade wallpaper, ornate mirrors and post modern furniture. And the possibilities for story telling are indeed endless, as the stores fixtures are convertible so that the merchandise can be displayed in a myriad of ways to the delight of the client. With the new store design and new (less is more) merchandising strategy, the pieces on display really pop, like those amazing crocodile and jeweled mules I photographed below.
